Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book nasceu das sessões realizadas em 1959 sob produção de Norman Granz para a Verve. O projeto reúne canções compostas por George Gershwin com letras de Ira Gershwin, escritas para musicais e espetáculos entre as décadas de 1920 e 1930. Nelson Riddle criou os arranjos e conduziu uma grande formação orquestral, construindo ambientes que valorizam a dicção, o ritmo e a flexibilidade melódica de Ella Fitzgerald. But Not for Me, Oh, Lady Be Good!, Someone to Watch Over Me, A Foggy Day, Embraceable You, They Can't Take That Away from Me e I Got Rhythm aparecem ao lado de títulos menos conhecidos, revelando a amplitude do cancioneiro dos irmãos Gershwin. A interpretação de But Not for Me recebeu o Grammy de melhor performance vocal feminina. Esta edição de 1988 distribui 53 canções em cinco LPs e dez lados, preservando o núcleo vocal do projeto. O conjunto permanece como uma referência do jazz vocal e da tradição do Great American Songbook.
